Frederique Constant continues its strong spate of releases with the Slimline Perpetual Calendar, this time designed by British watchmaking legend, Peter Speake. Once again, the brand succeeds in making a complicated watch user-friendly and urbane.

In watchmaking, timing is everything. The annual release cycle has, for several years now, focused on the major fairs held in Geneva in the spring and the autumn. At the start of April and end of August, the novelties revealed at Watches and Wonders and Geneva Watch Days respectively tend to dominate the headlines for the rest of the year.

However, this results in certain quiet spots in the calendar when a well-timed release has the opportunity to gain traction that it might otherwise struggle to muster were it released during the busier seasons. While January is not typically regarded as a great month for watch sales, it does present just such an opening. This year, on the 18th of the first month specifically, Frederique Constant has capitalized on the lull by announcing a new watch designed by British watchmaking legend, Peter Speake.

Speake, who might be best known for his association with the brand that still bears his married name (Speake-Marin), has spent the last few years educating a broad audience on the subject of watchmaking via his website, The Naked Watchmaker, another project started with his now ex-wife Daniela Marin. Now, he brings his particular design sensibilities to Frederique Constant with the Slimline Perpetual Calendar Manufacture.

Initial thoughts

Perhaps it should come as no surprise that Speake has brought a tasteful nakedness to the dial of the Frederique Constant Slimline Perpetual Calendar Manufacture. The heavily open-worked display reveals many of the dial side components, all of which are finished to the exacting standards FC demands for a piece of such import. Circular brushing picks out the brass wheels, which seem to glow against the matte maniplate finishing. Straight-grained steel components offer an edgy and aggressive contrast to the warm golden tones of the brass and the refined royal blue of the screws.

Despite the fact there is certainly a lot going on in this design, Speake has brought his trademark legibility to the piece, which aligns with Frederique Constant’s goal to create complicated timepieces that are easy to read. We saw it recently with the Frederique Constant Highlife Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar Manufacture, which artfully minified the visual noise one might expect from such a complication (especially when paired with a tourbillon).

Once more, the clever (and restrained) use of color (or, perhaps more accurately, the lack thereof) has resulted in a design that is extremely easy on the eye. The dark anthracite gray chapter ring that encircles the dial displays the cardinal hours (12, 3, 6, and 9) and minute markers. Each of the watch’s four “sub-dials” is outlined by overlapping chapter rings of their own, with those along the horizontal access slightly proud of those at 12 and 6.

That subtle use of levels helps distinguish the intersecting displays nicely. At 12 o’clock, we can see the brand name (in a simple font that matches the rest of the typography) arched around the outside of the month display. The months are indicated with an unusual mixture of two-letter abbreviations (JA, MR, JY, and NV for January, March, July, and November), dots (representing February, April, June, August, October, and December), and the number “5” and “9” (standing in for May and September). It’s weird and wonderful and I personally love it. It’s a great example of form following function and, given the restricted canvas with which Speake has had to work, it’s a cute solution to something that could have been problematic if he’d allowed it to be.

At 3 o’clock, the date is displayed via a red-tipped hand, whose style recalls the centrally-mounted hour and minute hands. It is mirrored by an identical hand trailing the 9 o’clock sub-dial, where one can pinpoint the day of the week. While the odd dates are indicated by numbers and the even dates by dots, there is plenty of space on the 9 o’clock register for every day of the week to have its own three-letter abbreviation (in English — Mon, Tue, Wed, Thu, Fri, Sat, and Sun).

The coolest work of the date indication? The leap year indication. The dot that represents February is actually an aperture. During years one, two, and three of the leap year cycle, the dot remains white, but during a leap year, it turns red, informing the wearer that there are not only 366 days in the year but also that February — now highlighted — is the month responsible for it. It’s an awesome touch I don’t remember seeing before but will advocate for more widespread usage going forward.

My favorite of the four sub-registers, however, is the one located at six o’clock. Here, we’re treated to a gracefully minimalistic moon phase indicator. I’m a fan of this indication for three aesthetic reasons that I feel make it quite special. Firstly, I applaud its modern styling. The conversation of how the moon phase complication — one of watchmaking’s most anachronistic, esoteric, and, arguably obsolete functions — can ever be deployed unobtrusively in a contemporary fashion is one frequently had in the beer halls of Switzerland, Germany, and anywhere else that cares to concern itself with the minutiae of watch design. The circular graining of the wheel connects it to the visible wheels of the movement and its dark gray color makes it seem almost brutalist.

Secondly, I love the integration of blue and gold tones that ties this element of the watch to the rest of its design. Having a heat-blued screw as the center point of the moon phase disc, ringed by a brass flange adds a technical flavor to the display while ensuring it harmonizes chromatically with the rest of the caliber.

Lastly, I’m mightily impressed with the cleanliness of this component and its integration. The moon phase disc sits below the chapter ring (adding another level to the display), which could lead one to assume the wheel’s teeth are simply hidden by the chapter ring itself. That could easily have been the case but the decision to make the six o’clock sub-dial a “broken circle” means that hiding the apparently floating wheel’s teeth wouldn’t be possible. Clearly, then, the teeth are beneath the disc, which is not only elegant but visually satisfying to behold in operation.

Wearable tech

Frederique Constant is very proud (and vocally so) about the wearability of its watches. Even (if not especially) its complicated ones. This Perpetual Calendar measures 42 mm across and just 12.05 mm thick. That second measurement is the key. Once again, FC has succeeded in making a watch that is at once complicated and comfortable, timeless and trendy, easygoing and elegant. Priced just below $12,000, this is also a serious value proposition from a well-known, well-respected maker that is making heavy-hitting horology more accessible as a matter of course.

With the release of the Frederique Constant Highlife Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar Manufacture, the Geneva-based brand once more challenges the assumptions of what one can expect from certain price points by pulling together a lot of technology in a sub-30K package.

Frederique Constant has once again done what they do best: provide astounding value for watchmaking that’s usually unobtainable to all but elite collectors. This time it’s a new version of a watch which combines the prestigious features highlighted in its name, a tourbillon and perpetual calendar. Introduced on the occasion of the Citizen Group’s Fifth Avenue boutique opening in New York, the newest model offers all that for under $30 grand.

There are so many watches in the world and ever more released daily, that one might think it should be getting easier to find diverse company structures and product offerings. One might imagine that there would be so many outliers disrupting pricing expectations that those outliers would form a category of their own, but it isn’t so. The mainstream industry is remarkably consistent in terms of pricing strategy. Margins vary from brand to brand, of course, but, from the outside looking in, there seems to be a broad correlation that is immediately explicable.

Major brands and members of unstoppable groups offer a high quality-to-price ratio because of their economies of scale. Smaller independent brands that use standard, usually off-the-shelf movements often do so to free up the budget for creativity. As such, it is more than fair to say that “not all ETA-powered watches are created equal”, and that such a movement or its many clones have a place in watches that run from $500 up to $5,000 and beyond, bizarre as that may seem to the uninitiated.

What Frederique Constant is doing (and has been doing for quite some time, however), is creating calibers that feature technologies — some of which are entirely new and in-house developed and made — that barely make any sense at this price point. The value (especially in terms of technical excellence) is mind-boggling. Whether one finds the aesthetics attractive or not is by the by in terms of cost positioning analysis. In this regard, these watches aren’t just incredible propositions, they are bold statements of intent of the brand itself and a rallying cry to brands of similar means: gone are the lazy days — your public demands more! Now is the time to deliver.

Frederique Constant makes high horology (relatively) accessible

Whenever Frederique Constant releases a new complicated watch, I brace myself. Dutifully, I read the press release. I absorb the images. I imagine or try the watch on my wrist. I form a professional opinion and then a personal one. Is it a good watch materially? The answer in Frederique Constant’s case is always yes. Does it do something new? For this brand, the answers veers wildly from, “No, not at all, it’s just a nice watch,” to, “What on Earth is that oscillator all about, and why does it seem to be shivering? Is it cold in here?” Is it good value? Undoubtedly, when it comes to FC, you get at least what you paid for and often a lot more. Although this may be jarring for those who equate value to cost (something I’ve never understood), watches from Frederique Constant become better value the higher up the price list you climb.

The weird and wonderful regulating organs or complications the brand has, in recent years, made its bread and butter, are special. They offer watch lovers who truly appreciate the workings of the watch and what’s going on behind the dial, the chance to own mechanisms that previously would have been totally out of reach.

What you need to know about the new Highlife Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar

I’m not suggesting $30,000 is not a lot to pay for a watch. It’s a massive amount of cash. Where I come from it’s a very nice car and a family holiday with plenty of spending money to boot. But for a Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar from an established maker that has global recognition, it is an extremely attractive option. Better still, this complication has been deployed in the Highlife line (my personal favorite case shape from the brand), and gifted with a remarkably restrained dial that doesn’t crow about its inner workings too much. Yes, the tourbillon is visible at six o’clock through a nicely framed aperture, but it is quiet.

Here, legibility is king, and the watch is all the better for it. The very concept of a perpetual calendar implies daily wear and thus, in my opinion, all perpetual calendar watches have a duty to be chameleonic.

The versatility of the Frederique Constant Highlife Tourbillon Perpetual Calendar Manufacture is hammered home by the strap options available for this watch. While its natural home is arguably the bracelet upon which it is presented, it also comes with a handsome (and aggressively tapered) rubber strap, which changes its appearance entirely. A dark blue alligator leather strap is also available, which would be the perfect pairing for a more formal evening event.

Better still, from a daily wear perspective, this model is water resistant to 100 meters, which while something I would hope most brands could offer in 2023, is not something one should ever take for granted on a watch boasting such esteemed complications.

The stainless steel case is 41 mm wide and 12.65 mm thick. Considering it’s housing an in-house automatic caliber with a tourbillon regulator and a perpetual calendar, that’s impressive indeed.

Although this watch lacks a seconds hand (which no doubt helps keep the overall height down to these wearable proportions), it displays the date in the 3 o’clock sub-dial, the day across the dial at 9 o’clock, with the month and leap year indicator comfortably sharing the 12 o’clock register.

This watch joins the collection in the brand’s 35th year, which has also been marked by the opening of the Citizen Group’s very first multi-brand boutique on Fifth Avenue, New York. With such an imposing presence on one of the most desirable streets in the world, Citizen (Frederique Constant’s parent company) is well-placed to push the brand in new and exciting directions, building on the foundations laid by a stellar three-and-a-half decades in the business.

Personally, I would like to see Frederique Constant’s monolithic oscillator technology in more packages. While the brand excels at creating watches of a timeless style, I think there is also an opportunity for FC to really lean into its growing reputation as an experimenter and bring out more adventurous and avant-garde case designs that cause as many waves in the aesthetics-focused community as their mechanics have done for the tech-obsessed.

Whatever the future holds, it looks to be in safe hands. With Niels Eggerding steering the ship and overseeing successful launch after successful launch, it is surely just a matter of time before the gloves come off for good.

Frederique Constant’s Highlife collection, which hit centre stage in 2020, is a sleek, sporty and youthful design that’s perfectly pitched at a younger audience. So it makes sense that it’s the Highlife that the brand has chosen to celebrate their musical partner, The Avener — specifically in two limited editions offered in 432 pieces each.

Now, 432 might seem like an odd number for an LE, but given that The Avener is one of the leading lights of the electro scene, it makes sense. Because 432Hz is apparently regarded as the perfect frequency, delivering calm and harmony. Of course, the sum total of both these watches is 864, but we’re not too sure about what that represents in acoustics.

We do know that these watches live up to the values of the Highlife. The first is a 39mm steel piece with a blue and black dial representing sound waves as seen on a studio monitor. The shade of blue is specific too; it was used on the cover of The Avener’s first album, a global success boosted by the single Fade Out Lines.

The second LE offers more of a nocturnal mood, with a black strap, black DLC case, black dial, luminous black coating, and a date window with a black background. Only the hands and hour markers stand out. Again, there’s a sound wave motif, but here, it’s in a concentric pattern, radiating out from the central pinion.

Both watches come with two strap options, which can be changed without tools. The first comes with a steel bracelet and black rubber. The second comes with black rubber and black nubuck options.
