Citizen unveils three new limited-edition Attesa models, a special tribute to the Hakuto-R lunar exploration program, featuring the latest in watch technology.

In 2019, Citizen became a corporate sponsor of ispace’s Hakuto-R lunar exploration program. This program aims to explore and utilize the resources of the moon through the use of advanced robotic spacecraft technology. The first mission, Mission 1, was successfully launched in December 2022, making ispace the first commercial lander to be sent into space with the goal of landing on the moon. This mission provided valuable insights and data for future lunar landings.

As part of their partnership with ispace, Citizen supplies their proprietary “super titanium” alloy for the landing legs of the lunar lander. Super titanium is a lightweight and durable material that has become a hallmark of Citizen’s watches. The collaboration between Citizen and ispace has opened up new frontiers in both watchmaking and space exploration.

Introducing the Hakuto-R Collaboration Models

This year Citizen presents three new limited-edition Attesa models that pay homage to the Hakuto-R lunar exploration program. These watches combine state-of-the-art technology with exquisite design elements inspired by the moon, the ultimate destination of the Hakuto-R lunar lander. Each of these limited-edition Attesa models is a testament to Citizen’s dedication to incorporating advanced technology into their watches.

Model CC4065-61Y Featuring Mother Of Pearl Dial

The CC4065-61Y model features the first-ever full mother of pearl dial from the Attesa collection. The mother of pearl dial is layered over a colored base, evoking the distinctive patterns found on the moon’s surface. The center links of the bracelet are crafted from recrystallized titanium, adding a touch of lunar magic to the design. This model showcases a range of materials with different textures and properties, perfectly capturing the mysterious nature of moonlight at night.

Equipped with Citizen’s advanced F950 movement, this watch offers a range of functions that make it a grand complication in the world of quartz watches. It features a perpetual calendar, world time, and a 1/20th of a second chronograph, among other impressive features. Model BY1008-67L Featuring Moon Phase Complication

The BY1008-67L model is a dynamic piece that pays tribute to the progress of technological innovation achieved by ispace’s Hakuto-R program and Citizen’s own development capabilities. The textured ink on the dial evokes the rugged surface of the moon, capturing its unique patterns and textures. This model features Luna Program, a function that calculates the moon phase for each day based on date signals received from multi-band radio transmitters. The moon phase is then automatically adjusted and displayed on the dial, adding a touch of celestial beauty to the timepiece.

The case and bracelet of the BY1008-67L model are crafted in black DLC, reminiscent of the peaceful hush of the night. The case is made of super titanium coated with “Duratect” DLC, a hard, carbon-based layer that provides scratch resistance and preserves the definition and finish of the watch. Powered by Citizen’s Caliber H874, this timepiece offers precise timekeeping with an accuracy of ±15 seconds per month. Retail price is USD 1,475 and limited to 2,400 pieces.

Model BY1009-64Y Featuring Golden Moon

The BY1009-64Y model is another tribute to the progress of technological innovation and the artistic depiction of the moon. Like its counterpart, the BY1008-67L, it features the textured ink on the dial that evokes the rugged surface of the moon, paying homage to the Hakuto-R program’s pioneering spirit. Equipped with Luna Program, this model also showcases the moon phase function, with a moon phase window that displays the current moon phase in a deep black color printed using pearl ink. The golden moon emerges from the darkness of the star-filled sky, creating a captivating visual display.

The metallic pink accents on the dial of the BY1009-64Y model are inspired by the color of cherry blossoms, adding a touch of elegance to the overall design. The case and bracelet, like the previous model, are crafted in black, symbolizing the tranquility of the night. Powered by Citizen’s Caliber H874, this timepiece offers accurate timekeeping, ensuring that every moment is measured with precision. Retail price is USD 1,475 and limited to 2,100 pieces.

Each watch in this collection encapsulates the spirit and ethos of the Hakuto-R lunar exploration program. Martin Klocke explains the historical inspirations for Sherpa Watches

The founder of Sherpa Watches slays it with compressor dive watches.

I met charismatic Martin Klocke in Geneva during Watches and Wonders at the AHCI exhibition. After our first Negroni he started to drop some cool Zen Buddhist philosophy on me and that lead to a discussion about his brand Sherpa watches. I was genuinely impressed with Martin’s knowledge on compressor dive watches, particularly with historical Enicar compressors. I sat down with Martin for a quick tete-a-tete.

1. When I first met you in Geneva, I was curious about the name. So, my first question is how did you arrive at the brand name – Sherpa?

Well, to explain this fully, we have to do a small excursion into history: in 1956, the original watchmaker Enicar SA in Lengnau sponsored a Swiss expedition to Mt Everest and Lhotse. During this expedition, they discovered that the Sherpas were doing the main job, and so they named their most robust watch “Sherpas” in honour of them. And then continued with a now legendary series of watches under this name. I wanted to bring back those watches, because some ten years ago I really grew fond of them, and when I started on the watch brand adventure, I found that “Sherpa” as a trademark for watches was available, and I registered it. This is how the name came to me. Basically the passion for the old Sherpa series of original Enicar SA from the 1950s and 1960s, and the origins going back to 1956.

In hindsight, this is a really good brand name for me, as it also allowed me to connect to the Tibetan-Buddhist tradition of the Sherpas. I am a Tibetan Buddhist myself, and this opened up the possibility to develop the “mantramatic” movement featuring the first spiritual complication in a watch.

2. Unlike most watch companies, you are transparent about the list of your suppliers and all of them are based in Europe. Does Made in Europe matter anymore?

This is a good question and the answer will depend on whom you ask. For me, this was clear: I for my part wanted to bring the watches back with German and Swiss parts only. For me it does matter. Only in Europe I can be sure that working conditions and environmental concerns are satisfied. And also we have to keep business in Europe, otherwise we will only inherit lists of suppliers in Asia to our children… Being an outsider to the watch industry when I started, and being completely naïve, I did not fully understand the implications of this decision – price wise – but in the end I kept my decision and I am happy to have done so, even though it resulted in a higher price point than what I assumed at the beginning.

The original watches in the 1950s and 1960s were 100% Swiss made, and I wanted to keep this heritage in Europe to honour the originals. Of course not everyone can appreciate this attitude, I understand this, but many customers do.

3. The design language of your watches is evocative of 60’s and 70’s compressor dive watches. Can you describe the inspiration behind the design of your watches?

As mentioned above, the Ultradive and the OPS are both members of the Sherpa series of original Enicar SA from the 1960s. Even though this era is clearly visible, these designs had something timeless to them and I always knew that they would have a place in the current market. We refined the design on many levels, and increased the quality in every aspect. This includes a complex sapphire box glass with black metallization on the rim to reduce reflections, applied diamond polished indices on the domed dial, faceted diamond polished hands, Sherpa Orange Super-LumiNova and many more.

The other inspiration was the company Ervin Piquerez from Bassecourt, Switzerland (also called EPSA). EPSA was a hugely innovative case maker company, pioneering and patenting the “Compressor” design in several versions. They had over 200 patents and supplied to many companies, mostly with their double crown cases. I take up their heritage and design by reinventing the compressor bayonet and the compressor crowns in my new models. This makes them the only complete compressor watches on the market, and thus not only are my watches evocative of “compressor dive watches”, they ARE compressor watches. This was the minimum I could do to appreciate the heritage. And we pay tribute to that heritage by having. The “EPSA-Stop” name engraved next to the original EPSA dive helmet logo on the case back. So, the inspiration comes from two Swiss companies which unfortunately closed their doors in the 1980s, but offering a legacy worth taking up again.

4. Finally, can you give us a preview of what is in works?

Of course, looking at the amazing legacy of the Sherpa series of the past, one can see how many wonderful models could be on the horizon. And I love them all! This goes from GMT watches to Chronographs to further dive watches.

The next step will be a metal bracelet. And then we will do some variations of the Ultradive dials and maybe also variations of the OPS, opening up the models to a wider audience by giving more options

And after that of course we are planning new models. I expect them to come out in 2024.

The G-Shock, a watch born out of a personal quest for indestructibility, has grown to become a cultural icon, blending technological innovation with high impact style. The G-Shock Legacy

In 1981, Kikuo Ibe, an engineer at Casio, embarked on a personal mission to create an indestructible watch. This pursuit was inspired by the heartbreak he experienced when a pocket watch gifted by his father broke upon being accidentally dropped. Ibe sought to design a watch capable of withstanding a 10-meter drop, 10-bar water pressure, and having a battery life of 10 years. This ambitious concept was titled the “Triple 10” principle.

After two years of tireless research and development, Ibe and his team, known as “Project Team Tough,” developed the breakthrough “floating module.” The concept was inspired by the observation of a rubber ball bouncing and how its core remained unaffected by the impact. The team suspended the timekeeping module of the watch within the case via a hollow core structure, providing unparalleled shock protection. This innovation marked the birth of the first G-Shock, the DW-5000C, in 1983.

Over the years, the G-Shock introduced a myriad of models with various features. The DW-6900C model in 1995, with its innovative Triple-graph liquid crystal display, horseshoe shaped case and front button design, cemented the G-Shock’s place in pop culture. The watch was adopted by hip-hop artists and skateboarders, and it soon became a must-have accessory for the youth. Casio also began collaborations with artists and streetwear designers, releasing limited edition G-Shocks that became collectibles.

Recognizing the need to cater to a wider demographic, Ibe wished to develop a metal watch that were suitable for formal occasions and retain G-Shock’s shock resistant structure. This led to the development of the MR-G series, which marked the G-Shock’s entry into the premium market.

Casio also expanded its signature lines like the Master of Gfeaturing the iconic Frogman series, introducing full metal versions of the original like the GMW-B5000 and most recently the full metal GM-B2100, which further boosted the brand’s popularity.

The G-Shock series is not only a utilitarian and professional tool but a fashion accessory as well. It is one of the most recognizable wristwatches worldwide. In 2017, Casio announced the sale of its 100 millionth G-Shock, underlining the global popularity of this series.

The latest full metal G-Shock series is a new milestone in Casio’s journey of innovation. These full metal timepieces feature striking dials adorned with a multicolored array of hues and gradations. Its case and bracelet are entirely made of stainless steel, a departure from the resin-based structure of its predecessors.

The case of the G-Shock Full Metal 5000 measures 43.2mm across and 49.3mm top to bottom, with a thickness of 13mm. Despite being all-metal, the watch doesn’t feel overly heavy on the wrist, thanks to its moderate size. The Full Metal 5000 series is available in stainless steel and black ion-plated steel versions, weighing approximately 167 grams and water resistant to 200 meters.

The dial of the Full Metal 5000 series is purely digital, driven by a quartz movement powered by solar cells. The watch offers a range of functions, including a countdown timer, a stopwatch, five daily alarms, a world time function, and a full auto-calendar. The dial is protected by a mineral crystal set beneath a strategically designed bezel that shields the crystal from most impacts.

Equipped with Tough Solar, Casio’s proprietary solar charging system, the G-Shock Full Metal 5000 series is not only incredibly accurate but also almost self-sufficient. It syncs with an atomic time signal or connects to Bluetooth for ultra precise timekeeping. The battery is designed to last 22 months on a full solar charge.

The G-Shock Polychromatic Full Metal 2100 Series

G-Shock launched the 2100 series in 2019 with much fanfare, featuring the distinctive octagonal-shaped bezels that have since become a hallmark of the collection. Initially available in options like resin and translucent resin, the series quickly gained popularity, prompting G-Shock to introduce metal- covered and full metal versions to cater to a wider range of tastes.

In 2022, G-Shock brought the 2100 series to new heights with the full metal GM-B2100D-1A. The GM-B2100 features a more complex and robust design, with a screw-in caseback and an integrated bracelet. This structure enhances the watch’s durability without compromising the G-Shock’s signature shock resistance.

The dual-layer dial accommodates the transmission of sunlight/artificial light through the dial, which recharges the long-lasting internal battery. The hour markers are lengthened, raised and textured, enhancing the watch’s appearance. Despite its robust construction, the GM-B2100 offers a comfortable fit thanks to its 44.4mm diameter, 49.8mm lug-to-lug and 12.8mm case size, and the metal bracelet is nicely tapered.

The GM-B2100PC-1A and GM-B2100BPC-1A models showcase color gradation on the hour marks and the watch hands. The GM-B2100PC-1A uses a purple/blue gradation, and the GM-B2100BPC-1A features a warm-hued orange/red gradation. These color schemes nicely complement the black components around the dial.

Advanced features of the G-Shock Models

Apart from their unique designs, these new G-Shock models are packed with advanced features. The new models offer solar-powered timekeeping with Bluetooth connectivity. This feature ensures that the watch is always charged and maintains accurate timekeeping. While many enthusiasts expected Citizen to utilize the Miyota 9075 GMT caliber, the brand surprised everyone by introducing the new Citizen 9054 caliber. This innovative proprietary movement elevates the Series 8 GMT watches to a whole new level. With enhanced accuracy, an impressive power reserve, and improved magnetic resistance, the 9054 caliber ensures exceptional performance and reliability.

Citizen 9054 caliber, which can also be manually wound, boasts an average daily accuracy of -10 to +20 seconds and a running time of approximately 50 hours. Furthermore, the enhanced magnetic resistance of 16,000 A/m surpasses the minimum requirements for an “anti-magnetic” label, providing additional durability and longevity.

The true highlight of the 9054 movement is its “flyer GMT” functionality, allowing for quick and independent adjustment of the hour hand to display the local time.
