Are you ready for a return of the ‘80s? The 1960s and ‘70s were a golden age of watch design, but brands are now looking to other decades to spice up their vintage reissue repertoires. And the polarizing styles of that era are starting to look fresh again, or at least nostalgic. Ready or not, George Michael and the Bulgari Bulgari are here to rock your world.

Inspired by Roman coins and stemming from the pen of watch design celebrity Gerald Genta, the Bulgari Bulgari derives from the brand’s Roma watch of 1975. But it was the 1980s when it gained popularity, and a well-known picture of George Michael shows him wearing an example of the watch paired to his signature gold cross earring and five-o’clock shadow. It’s this model and vibe that the new watches seem to channel.

At first glance, the new Bulgari Bulgari might not seem like a major departure from the existing collection. The combination of case material and dial color are the only novelty here, you might be tempted to assume. This particular configuration might feel a bit ‘80s, but what’s most notable is that it’s rendered in a new size for the modern line.

You can already get automatic Bulgari Bulgari watches at 41mm or quartz ones in more petite sizes. The new watches, however, introduce an automatic model with a crowd-pleasing diameter. Its 38mm sizing is exactly what a lot of modern fans are calling a “sweet spot” nowadays. Smaller sizes are in fashion today, but let’s not forget that watches in the ‘80s were often even smaller.

It won’t necessarily win over detractors who sneer at the garish style of that glam decade, but it’s going to be even more attractive to a lot of enthusiasts who already embrace the era—or who just like the Bulgari Bulgari. I’m one of them. That giant logo branding with “Bulgari”-emblazoned bezel? Almost no other brand can get away with this kind of thing without being called a “fashion watch,” but Bulgari manages to pull it off stylistically and, of course, is beyond reproach in terms of horological chops.

Just as you’ll find in the existing 41mm Bugari Bulgari models, but now fit into a 38mm frame, the in-house BVL191 automatic movement beats inside. While it simply means “time only” in Italian, the brand referring to these movements mellifluously as “Solotempo” only adds to the charm. In addition to the 38mm automatic watches, the brand has also introduced quartz versions in 26mm and each comes in 18k yellow or rose gold variants. We look forward to variants in steel (or other materials) in the future.

Is the return of ‘80s styles a good thing? You’ll have to be the judge of that. But watch fans who were kids at the time are now of an age at which they can more likely afford luxury watches, and brands are happy to tap into their nostalgia. There’s a little bit of cheekiness in revisiting the ‘80s, but some styles that once looked over-the-top are starting to take on a different tint now that we’re safely and sufficiently removed from the era. Brands have been cautiously cherry picking inspiration from the decade, and we can expect more to come.

Picture it – the bright, hot sun, shining down on flawless, black tarmac. The low, guttural growling of revving engines ring out like a symphony of high octane anticipation. Your gaze drifts down from the ribbons of heat distorting the track ahead, to the instrument panel of your Bulgari Vision GT – a daring, cutting edge vision of carbon fiber, rubber, and aluminum. You glance down at your wrist, the chronograph counter ticking down to the definitive moment as your arm brushes against the Alcantara of the racing bucket seat. You hear a ding… it’s the microwave… you press pause…

2023 marks the 10 year anniversary of the Vision Gran Turismo project, a collaborative endeavor between legendary gaming studio Polyphony Digital and the world’s most prestigious car manufactures. Though this year will be a little bit different. Rather than seeing a mind bending supercar from the likes of Lamborghini, Ferrari, or Bugatti, this year’s vision comes from none other than Bulgari. Together with Polyphony Digital, Bulgari’s Product Creation Executive Director Fabrizio Buonamassa Stigliani and former Pininfarina Design Director Fabio Filippini, have collaborated to not only create two limited edition timepieces for Gran Turismo, but also an entirely unique hypercar within the video game itself.

Directly connected in both style and material, the Bulgari Vision GT car and Bulgari Aluminum x Gran Turismo Special Edition chronographs are built around the concept of blending sport and luxury lifestyle in a seamless and elegant way. The car, which Bulgari playfully suggests may actually see a real life race track at some point “in the not-too-distant future”, is retro-futurist vision of aluminum, carbon fiber and rubber, echoing the material components of the watches. A model of the car was on display at the Gran Turismo World Series Finals in Barcelona.

In turn, the watches, a part of the Aluminum series, echo a similar retro style, a modern, sporty reinterpretation of the Aluminum series from the late nineties – itself an evolution of the Bulgari Diagono. Two versions of the watches will be made, 500 of which will feature a bright yellow dial with black accents and 1200 made with an anthracite gray dial with black and yellow accents. Naturally, anyone who purchases one of the timepieces will be granted a code for access to the car within the game.

At first blush, some may question the idea of a luxury watch and jewelry maker collaborating on such a project. Gamers, in particular, tend to be very sensitive to commercial tie ins, especially when done in long established and cherished franchises like Gran Turismo. If the genesis of a collaboration is not immediately apparent or organic, gamers are likely to bristle. However, when one is able to take a step back and view the Bulgari Aluminum Vision GT and the accompanying Aluminum series watches from a less serious perspective, the true purpose becomes clear – the car, the watches, the collaboration – is fun. That’s right, fun (and before anyone scoffs at the idea of gamers being disinclined towards luxury timepieces… have a quick look at the prices involved in racing simulation rigs…)

Despite the lofty, insightful, and intellectually stimulating discussions of high concept design and branding alignment, watches are fun. Cars are fun. Perhaps, most obviously, video games are fun! Games like Gran Turismo are so compelling, so enduring, and so addicting, because they are able to put gamers into the literal driver’s seat of cars that are otherwise completely inaccessible. It’s the purist and most tangible form of wish fulfillment outside of winning the lottery. It allows for the imagination to connect in a very real way to reality.

In a similar vein, the Vision Gran Turismo project brings the world’s greatest car makers, who are themselves used to pushing the boundaries of what’s possible, together with the studio to truly throw the rule book out the window and dream. What can we create if we could create anything? Viewed from this perspective, Bulgari is the perfect watch partner for such an endeavor – a brand that has become synonymous with connecting challenging, high concept design with performance and engineering, in the most effortlessly stylish and chic way.

Gaming is about immersive experiences brought to life. In a related way, watches provide an analogous kind of wish fulfillment in that they are often highly evocative objects. Strapping on a watch that transports you to a cherished time, an exotic place, or a passionate pastime, is one of the most fundamental driving factors behind all watch collecting. With that in mind, donning one of the two limited Bulgari Aluminum x Gran Turismo timepieces, plugging in either a controller or, ideally, a driving wheel, and spending a leisured Saturday morning setting lap records on far away tracks sounds about as good as it gets. Well, unless of course Bulgari makes good on the promise of creating their Vision GT car IRL, that is.

Recently in the limelight for its full-marble Only Watch timepiece, Bulgari kicks off Geneva Watch Days 2023 with a stellar presentation of six new watches. Designed for both men and women, these novelties cement Bulgari’s dual identity in watch and jewelry making while underscoring its rich expertise in design creativity. For men, Bulgari offers a new rendition of its superstar icon, the Octo Finissimo, and for women, the Italian maison spotlights its unassailable jewelry crafting savoir-faire through four secret watches across two all-time favorite signature themes, Serpenti and Monete.

Since its introduction in 2014, the Bulgari Octo Finissimo has been dressed in near ever material conceivable. Stainless steel, gold, platinum, titanium, ceramic, carbon, tantalum for Only Watch 2021, and as mentioned above, marble for Only Watch 2023. For Geneva Watch Days 2023, the Octo Finissimo reprises its application with carbon which was first seen in the 2018 Octo Finissimo Carbon Minute Repeater. At that time it was highly disruptive in terms of design as well as concept since it is not often that a high complication such as the minute repeater gets cased in carbon.

So today Bulgari revisits this high-tech material and applies it to two existing models: the Octo Finissimo Automatic and the Octo Finissimo Perpetual Calendar. But there’s more. To bring a delightful contrast to the futuristic aesthetic of the all-black carbon — with a beautiful naturally dappled surfaces — Bulgari incorporates the two watches with elegant streaks of shimmering gold. Key details on the dial such as the hour numerals and markers, the hands, the Bulgari logo and the Swiss Made label are all enrobed in rose gold tone, while the crown is actually made of 18K rose gold along with a black ceramic insert.

Which is all very nice but in case you’re wondering, we’ve still not arrived at the main event. Turn the watch over to the back and you’ll see what the fuss is all about. There, over the glorious expanse of its generous sapphire crystal case back lies the mechanical manufacture ultra-thin movement Caliber BVL 138 (BVL 305 for the perpetual calendar model) and its gorgeous gold-tone movement bridges. Finished with traditional Côtes de Gèneve and dotted with polished screws and rubies, it is a beautiful sight by any and all measure. In keeping with the gold-tone theme, even the platinum winding micro-rotor is dressed in gold.

And reminding you of the watch’s love for gold (apparently it’s called chrysophilia) is a miniature cartouche attached on the case middle.

Bulgari Serpenti Misteriosi Secret Watch

The Serpenti is of course Bulgari’s most famous icon, and the Italian maison continually unveils ever more intoxicating design renditions year after year. Coiling sensuously around the wrist, the Serpenti watch more often than not comes with a quartz movement. But since 2022 with the arrival of the Caliber BVL 100 Piccolissimo movement, Bulgari now has the ability to create mechanically-driven Serpenti high jewelry watches, thus cementing its reputation as a watchmaking jeweler.

Caliber BVL 100 is not only the smallest mechanical movement ever made by Bulgari, but also one of the smallest mechanical movements ever made in the luxury industry. In a way, it shows us that Bulgari has not only mastered ultra-thin movement making but also ultra-small. More importantly, with BVL 100 comes a world of new opportunities for Bulgari to adapt the Serpenti for modern watch-savvy audiences. And the forward thinking doesn’t stop here.

As the Serpenti is not just a jewel, not just a watch, but very much both, Bulgari intends it to be enjoyed on both fronts. Thus, the movement is completely removable, so that in the event it needs to be sent back for servicing, the Serpenti can still remain with its owner, and continue to be worn as a jewel. You could also purchase a quartz movement as a standby unit should you so desire.

For Geneva Watch Days 2023, Bulgari debuts two additional looks for the mechanical Serpenti: a fully iced-out version in white gold with eyes of dazzling pear-shaped emeralds, and a rose gold model covered in black lacquer scales interlaced with navette diamonds, along with green pear-shaped emerald eyes.

A grail piece for many jewelry lovers, the Bulgari Monete combines art, jewelry and history with perfect aplomb. Featuring antique precious coins sourced predominantly from Rome and Greece but also other ancient cities, this collection now includes timepieces via the Monete Catene Secret Watch, which once again underscore’s Bulgari incredible creativity in combining watch and jewelry design.

Across two different and yet equally spectacular models, Bulgari revisits an aesthetic inspired by Roman jewelry of the 1^st century AD. In the Monete Catene Dual Time, the two coins of the Monete Catene Dual Time cuff evoke the reign of a fabled couple, that of Septimius Severus – emperor from 193 to 211 AD – and his empress, Julia Domna, who was venerated as a goddess. On the Monete Catene wristwatch: a denarius, or silver coin, bearing the effigy of Emperor Caracalla, who ruled from 198 to 217 AD. Minted during his reign, the coin expresses this emperor’s strategic genius.

Bulgari’s jewelry crafting savoir-faire comes through most evidently in the smithing of the gourmette bracelets of the watches, known as catene in Italian. This quintessentially Italian style has been a part of Bulgari’s creative heritage since the 1940s, and first seen featuring the Monete design in the 1960s. Reminiscent of the Octo Monete watches of the past, the Monete Catene wristwatch comes with twin rows of catene chains lightly sprinkled with diamonds.

Meanwhile, the Monete Catene Dual Time takes things up several notches — decidedly into high jewelry territory — with five rows of chains all fully paved with diamonds. Its rectangular case was inspired by a Bulgari heritage watch from the 1970s and combines a single row of baguette diamonds on the periphery contrasting with snow-set diamonds all around the two coins. The entire watch also features rose gold in addition to touches of yellow and white gold set with more diamonds all around — talk about wrist candy.

And to continue with the candy metaphors, these watches come with a surprise center too. If you’re thinking that Parmigiani Fleurier hasn’t been getting enough attention, I’d be inclined to disagree with you. An entire design overhaul a couple of years ago cleaned up a catalog under the leadership of Guido Terreni.

The do-over worked wonders on watch journalists, as well. Ever since Tonda PF has been the darling of industry insiders and quietly championed as a rival to the more talked-about producers of modern classics.

In many ways, Parmigiani has faced an image problem to the one Bvlgari faced for years. It is an undoubtedly graceful brand, producing watches that, thanks in large part to their pared-back dial designs and confident use of negative space, have a tendency to look more like fashionable accessories than the serious horological instruments they are. But what Bvlgari has had that Parmigiani Fleurier has not had is a headline-grabbing range that, upon its release, upended the mainstream perception of the manufacture.

Parmigiani desperately needed its own Octo Finissimo. And, while the Tonda PF Sport is nowhere near as disruptive (and only a marginal modification to the brands existing Tonda PF line), it finally feels as if Parmigiani has a flagship model around which an entire brand universe can be built.

The Low Down

The collection comprises four pieces. Functionally, you can choose between either a time and date model or a chronograph. Both designs are available in either rose gold or stainless steel. The time and date pieces are 41mm wide and 9.8mm thick, while the chronographs come in at 42mm across, standing 12.9mm tall on the wrist. Interestingly, although the chronograph is slightly larger, it looks a bit smaller from a distance due to the case relatively boxier case and busier dial.

The recognizable “double lug” design flows naturally into textured Cordura-treated rubber straps that suit the “yacht set” vibe of these watches down to a T. It’s just as well that the strap is well chosen, as the proprietary lug attachment means subbing it out for an alternative is far from straightforward.

The most notable external changes from the standard Tonda PF line can be seen in the crown and the bezel. Firstly, the crown is bigger, has a second chamfer where it touches the case, and has wide, deeper knurling for better grip. It is worth mentioning, however, that while the Tonda PF Sport is water resistant to 100m, this is exactly the same water resistance rating as the regular Tonda PF. Both ratings are more than sufficient, of course, but from a story-telling angle, I perhaps would have enjoyed seeing the Sport line increase the depth rating here.

For a more “rugged” look (although not that rugged), the bezel fluting has been simplified. The regular Tonda PF bezel has precisely 225 flutes, while the Sport series has just 160 incisions per bezel. Of course, the PF Sport is still an extremely debonair watch as a result, but, side-by-side, the difference is easily spotted.

In-house movements power both styles of watch, with the expertly finished PF770 automatic and PF070 chronograph calibers visible through sapphire display backs. Notably, both movements are fitted with a 22-karat rose gold oscillating mass, which is a treat on a watch you can comfortably swim with.

IMHO

Let’s be real: the Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Sport is not revolutionary. It isn’t going to change the direction of watchmaking. In terms of design significance, it doesn’t even move the needle. And yet, it is glorious. It is beautiful. It is, at last, a fully realized idea from a brand that has been oh-so-close to perfection for oh-so-long. To me, these new releases feel like the culmination of every good intention that has gone before. They tie it all together. At last, this new era of Parmigiani Fleurier makes sense.

This is what the brand needed. It is a catalog-defining release. The Tonda PF Sport line offers very solid alternatives to runaway success stories like the Czapek Antarctique, the H. Moser & Cie. Streamliner, the Octo Finissimo from Bvlgari, and classics like the Patek Philippe Nautilus, Audemars Piguet Royal Oak, and the Vacheron Constantin Overseas and 222 collections. But best of all, it stares down one icon of the industry in a way few other watches have ever dared: that’s right, the Rolex Datejust has a legitimate rival from a brand that, in all honesty, cripples the Crown horologically speaking.

The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Sport doesn’t try to do anything remarkable. It’s a stone-cold killer. It has a mission and it delivers on all fronts. For my money, this is exactly what more brands should be trying to do: distill their knowledge, their experience, and their character and craftsmanship into a mature, wearable watch that is all business in the front and party in the back.

Every model the brand has released since its aesthetic rebirth has been close to the top of my wishlist in whatever category said models occupied, but they never landed at the top. That, with this release, has changed. The feeling in the industry was clear. We want more luxury steel sports watches to choose from. Thankfully, Parmigiani was listening.
